How much do funerals cost?
The cost of a funeral depends on the services chosen — type of farewell ceremony, coffin, funeral accessories, and any additional services. The exact price can be determined after a consultation, with a clear and transparent breakdown of expenses.
What documents are required to organize a funeral?
For a traditional funeral, you need a medical certificate of the cause of death and a death certificate. Once these documents are obtained, funeral arrangements can begin.
What funeral grants are available and how can they be obtained?
In Latvia, a funeral grants can be obtained from the State Social Insurance Agency (VSAA). This usually amounts to twice the pension of the deceased (if they were a pensioner) or the average monthly salary for two months on which social contributions were paid.
If the deceased had no pension or social contributions, a municipal funeral grants is available — typically around €430.
The VSAA grants can be applied for at VSAA offices or via the portal latvija.lv. Municipal grants are provided by the social service department at the deceased’s registered place of residence.
How much does a new grave cost in Latvia?
In Latvia, including Riga and Jūrmala, it is not possible to privately purchase a grave. Burials take place in family graves or by arranging a new plot in public cemeteries. Fees are charged for cemetery services, such as:

In Latvia, it is possible to reserve two burial spaces in a public cemetery if the deceased and the person arranging the burial are close relatives — spouses or children. This allows families to secure a dignified burial place for loved ones in advance.
When can a secondary burial take place in a family grave?
Secondary burial in a family grave is allowed only 20 years after the previous burial. However, local municipal regulations may allow a shorter period.
